A Beginner's Kikay Kit

Time and time again I would be asked what are the make up essentials a girl should have. I have planned a lot of time to create a list, but most often than not, the list that I get to create feels too long for a beginner. Having said this, I went on a week long make up kit minimalism (which to everyone who knows me, is a very great feat!) and from there identified the barest minimum make up products I cannot live without.

FACE:
  • Primer - This makes the application of make up even and easier to blend. Most primers also help make up adhere longer to the face. This is optional but is nice to have if you have oily skin.
  • Foundation/Tinted Moisturizer - Since this creates the blank canvass for your make up, it is very important to note that among all make up products, this should be the one that you should invest in. For foundation, you could either use liquid, cream or powder, depending on the coverage you want to have and of course your skin type. If you feel that foundation is too heavy for you, you could opt for a tinted moisturizer, but only if you have dry skin or you do not oil up that much as the climate we have in our country is really not conducive to wearing tinted moisturizers as a skin base.
  • Setting Powder - This could be in pressed or loose form. This as the name suggests, is used to set the liquid or cream foundation to your face, making it more polished looking and long lasting.
  • Concealer - for under eyes, use a peachy pink/salmon colored concealer/corrector. This will neutralize the darkness. For spot concealing, make sure to use a shade that is nearest to your skin tone. Remember, a concealer conceals, therefore, it should never be obvious in person and in pictures that you are wearing one!
CHEEKS:
  • Blush - This could be in powder, cream or liquid form. I personally prefer powder especially for newbies because for one, the life span is longer and easier to control. I also advise 2 shades, one on the coral/peachy side, and the other in the rosey/pinky tone.
  • Bronzer - This is actually optional but a bronzer will really complete the look and make you look more polished if used correctly.
LIPS:
  • Lipstick: Like blush, I would suggest one peach/coral, one pinky/rosey, one nude and one red. This could be your only lippies for the next year or two.
  • Lip liners: This is optional for a beginner but if you should have only one, get it in a shade nearest to your lip color.
BROWS:
  • Brow Pencil - make sure the color is a shade or 2 lighter than your hair color. try to look for cool browns and not the warm, reddish browns. don't ever use black unless you are portraying a villain character. =)
  • Brow Powder -  same with brow pencil in terms of shades.
  • Brow Gel -  Optional but makes a huge difference. It holds brows in place and the tinted ones lighten up brows in a jiffy, brightening the over all look of the face.
EYES:
  • Eye Primer: Makes eye shadows and liners more vivid and adhere longer to the eye lids
  • Eye shadows : You can start with matte neutrals. Basic colors will be, black, dark brown, a brown that is nearest your skin tone, and an off white/bone beige color for highlighting.
  • Eyeliner : you can start with a black and a brown in either, pencil, lgel or liquid forms. For beginners, i think pencils will be perfect as starters.
  • Mascara: a black mascara that is waterproof is all you need. and since you should throw it away after 3 to 6 months of use, it's perfectly okay to use drugstore brands.
That's it! I cannot think of anything right now that I should be adding for a kikay kit for make up newbies. I will later post one with suggested drugstore/local brands for those on budget or just starting to play with colors. Till then! :)

Initial Review! --- Givenchy Photo Perfexion Fluid Foundation

I believe that if there is one make up product that one should invest for, it has got to be foundation...Of course having good skin to begin with is an added bonus ( a lot of my mua peers woul attest to that!) but because not everyone is blessed with a perfect skin, having the right foundation eases all the make up application after that.

Today I will be reviewing Givenchy Photo Perfexion Fluid Foundation. I got the shade 08 Perfect Amber. I play from NC37 to 42 (MAC) for reference. It has SPF20, which is good for protection, kinda bad for flash photography though from the reviews I have read before purchasing, it was really good for photographs. It promises a dewy finish while giving a long lasting light to medium coverage.

I tested this last November 1st when I went to the cemetery to visit my dad. The weather was kinda cold (I went there in the evening) so I have no idea if it was indeed long lasting on my oily skin or it only lasted because of the weather. I will road test this tomorrow and give an update.

Unblended
Unblended

Blended
Blended

The consistency is not too runny nor too thick, but what impressed me is that not only does it blend like a
dream, it's finish gives you a dewy glow without being really dewy...It's hard to explain but, here is what happened, upon blending, I was kinda waiting for it to be absorbed or to dry before I set it with powder, and because it still looks kinda dewy, I thought it was still wet...I got impatient and blotted my face with one ply of tissue paper (yes, that's right!), and to my suprise, nothing transferred! I touched my face to validate and yes, despite of the dewy appearance, my foundation was already absorbed and dry. I didn't even set my whole face with powder, just the t-zone areas where I tend to get really oily.

It felt so light on my skin, reminds me of a tinted moisturizer sans the greasy feeling. I got home around 3am, and my make up was still intact, no oiling up or whatsoever. Picture below was taken after 6 hours of application.

Overall, I am impressed. I never even thought that it would last me 4 hours but as I have said, it is still too early to tell. I will update this post once I get to test it under normal weather with my normal activities. Till then! :)

Ladelu...Lalalala

I have always believed that wearing something local is better than wearing knock off/imitation products...This goes for almost everything, including and most especially cosmetics and perfumes. The challenge that we have in our country right now is that we only have a few options to choose from as consumers. Sure, there would be some products that would pop out of the market, but oftentimes they are not that competitive enough to replace or even just be in rotation with the imported brands we have been using.

Then one boring weekend, I was browsing through some kikay forums, lurking on some items that were up for sale when I saw a thread regarding a locally manufactured brand of perfume that promises of high quality and affordable price, but what caught my attention is that they said that they don't have inspired perfumes...I got curious, so i went to their website...

I was neither dismayed or impressed. To be fair a local brand, I find their website at par with other non local online boutiques, though they could use a little more funk or zest.

Ordering was a breeze, they accept bank deposits, paypal and gcash. They also accept ayments thru bayadpo.com (customers can pay thru the courier upon receipt of products purchased for a certain fee).

I initially ordered Cotton, which reminded me of Clean...I honestly love it because it reminds me of the scent of  "just got out of the laundry shop clothes". I love that scent because it's simple, it's clean, just like fresh laundry and downy. :)

And because I was impressed, I ordered another 2 bottles.I ordered Good which reminds me of gradeschool and highschool colognes that I used to have but with super longevity. As the name of the scent says, it makes you reminisce of the innocent days. hahaha...clean, crisp and light...perfect for those hot and humid days. Celestial on the other hand is like Good but with more crisp and vibe to it. Think of a young girl with some attitude! I think the lavander did it!

I forgot to mention that when you buy a 50 ml. bottle of Ladelu, you get to receive 3 samples of the scents you have not yet purchased or received as samples. If you want to add more samples, you can ask them and just pay Php20 for each sample vial. Not bad eh? So far I have received samples for all the remaining scents and I can't wait to buy some of them again.

All in all, I only have praises for this company. I was super impressed with the customer service, communication, delivery, the packaging and most importantly, the quality of the products. I just hope that they will come up with more products for the Filipinos who like me are still hoping that the Philippine products can still be competitive with the foreign brands without straining our budget!

Becoming a Blogger

I have made this blog around two years now, but i can't really say that i have been really a blogger in anyway. This bog has just been my personal journal, and I seldom really published any to the public. But times have changed...So from now on, I promise to post atleast twice a week about random stuff, make up, beauty, fashion, music, food and what not. I need to start writing again, or else I will go crazier than I am right now! Hahaha

mukap sale!

Hey!!! creating this blog sale due to insistent public demand and because i am trying so hard to reorganize my stuff and trying to do some make up minimalism (that part is a big lie! hehe)...and i really want to buy something but i don't want to spend any extra money for it...hehehe

All items were purchased mid 2011 (yes, my addiction started only mid last year...thanks to youtube and the beauty bloggers...lol!)up to the current month.

They are 100% authentic not because i am a brand snob but because i would rather use a locally manufactured make up item than a fake one which i am not sure who to sue in case something happens to my skin should anything go wrong.

Anyway, some of them were merely swatched, tried, once, twice, thrice, some of them i just opened the box and took pictures of. anyone who knows me in person would know and can attest to that. :) If you are highly sensitive to pre-loved items, please don't waste both of our times. but if you are a make up enthusiast or a budding mua or you just simply want to try out some make up items before purchasing a brand new one, then this blog sale was made for you! :)

Should you want to purchase any of the items, please send me a pm thru my facebook or thru the blog comments. Shipping is Php50 for metro manila and Php100 for provincial addresses and is free for purchases Php1000 and up. I will also give freebies to qualified purchases.

All items shall be sanitized with a make up sanitizer prior to shipping. :)

Majority of the items come with their original boxes. I will inform you though if for some reason I cannot find the box of an item you are purchasing prior to your payment. :)

Reservation is strictly for 48 hours only upon receipt of invoice. Payment thru gcash, citibank savings bank deposit and bdo.

HCG Grocery Shopping/Meal Preparation

One of the challenges I face whenever I think of diets is what food am I going to eat and where can I get them. HCG proves to be a very challenging diet as the VLCD phase restricts a lot of foot items that you normally see around. It is best that one prepares their own meals to be assured of the measurements and the other hidden ingredients. I thought of having food delivered to me by companies catering to dieters, (sexychef, kitchenelle, etc.) but I found their prices exorbitant and impractical relative to the amount of food that you will be eating in actuality. During my first week of VLCD, I didn't prepare any meals. I relied on canned tuna, packed greens from the grocery, some stuff I from Inasal that I had to trim and blot the oil that came along with them. I lost weight but I felt that I could have gotten more satisfaction had I prepared the meals myself. Last Saturday, I cahllenged myself to prepare atleast a week's worth of proteins, becuase that's the component that I was struggling in this diet since options aorund my workplace is not that many. I had my fruits and veggies in place already taken cared by the packed greens and fruits I got from the grocery. Here is a rundown of what I have prepared for almost 2 week'd worth of protein meals (i went overboard and miscalculated, thus I resulted into having prepared for 2 weeks already! tee hee!):

Pan Grilled Beef Burger Patties:

  • 1 kilo of ground lean beef
  • 1 whole egg plus 1 egg white (for binding)
  • 1 Tbsp. of Italian Seasoning (mixed herbs)
  • 1 Tbsp. of Onion Powder
  • 1 Tbsp. of Garlic Powder
  • 1 Tbsp. of Chili Powder
  • 2 Tbsp. of Himalayan Salt
I mixed everything in a bowl and made them into 100 gram meatballs on a tray. I grilled them on top of a pan (i didnt have time to prepare the grill) sprayed with Pam Extra Virgin Olive Oil spray. I placed the cooke burger patties separately on micrawaveable containers. Makes 10 servings.

Herbed Steamed Creamy Dory Fillet:

  • 300 grams of Creamy Dory Fillet
  • 1 Tbsp. of Italian Seasoning (mixed herbs)
  • 1 Tbsp. of Onion Powder
  • 1 Tbsp. of Garlic Powder
  • 1 Tbsp. of Chili Powder
  • 2 Tbsp. of Himalayan Salt
  • A squeeze of lemon
I mixed everything and let the flavors seep in for around an hour. I laid the fillets flat on the tray and placed inside the oven toaster letting each side cook for 15 minutes each. Makes 2 servings placed separately on micrawaveable containers.

Herbed Pan Grilled Chicken Breast Fillet

  • 400 grams of Chicken Breast Fillet
  • 1 Tbsp. of Italian Seasoning (mixed herbs)
  • 1 Tbsp. of Onion Powder
  • 1 Tbsp. of Garlic Powder
  • 1 Tbsp. of Chili Powder
  • 2 Tbsp. of Himalayan Salt
  • A squeeze of lemon

  • I mixed everything and let the flavors seep in for around an hour. I laid the breast fillets flat on the pan sprayed with Pam Extra Virgin Olive oil and grilled them till cooked. Makes 4 servings placed separately on micrawaveable containers.

    Home Made Salad Dressing

1/2 cup Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar
    1/2 cup Bragg's Liquid Aminos
1/4 cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
1 Tbsp Mc Cormick Italian Seasoning (made of thyme, basil and other herbs)

Place on a bottle which has a dripper, if you have a salad dressing bottle, it would be better. Adjust ingredients according to taste. Shake well before using.

    Healthy Options

I went to Healthy Options before going to work tonight. I bought Spiru-tein shake packets. It's Php99 a pop replacing a protein meal at around 100 calories. 1 can of 16 servings costs around Php1400, a tad cheacper than getting it by sachet packs but I figured that I liked the accuracy of the sachets versus having to ensure that each serving is scooped right when I buy the can. I also bought Bragg's Liquid Amino (as a soy sauce alternative), Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar, Nu-Salt salt substitute, Wasa Crispbreads to subsittute the grissini sticks/melba toast, a bottle of vinaigrette which I will exchange tomorrow for another one because it's freaking 12o calories per 2 tablespoons! I also bought some greens from SM, and boy, they were cheap! Each pack which will last the whole day for me costs Php57, and 5 cans of  century tuna in water. Will post pictures later.

    HCG Phase 2 Day 4

    Morning Weight: 157.2
    Previous Day: 157.6
Total OVN Weight Loss: .4 lbs.

I think i made a lot of deviation from my protocol yesterday, thus the minimal weight loss...For one, I think I got some serious oil in my food yesterday, starting with the grilled blue marlin and the adobong kangkong and the chicken pesa...haaay...i will just make bawi today...

    breakfast: black coffee with stevia
morning snack: 1 pc wasa crispbread
lunch: 85 grams of lettuce, 90 grams of tuna in water, 1/2 grapefruit
afternoon snack: 1 pc wasa crispbread
dinner: 85 grams of lettuce, 90 grams of tuna, 1 pack of spiru-tein in water
    evening snack: 1 apple?

    breakfast: black coffee with stevia
lunch: grilled blue marlin, meatless adobong kangkong, 1/2 grapefruit
    dinner: pesang manok, 1 apple

    Monday, July 23, 2012

HCG Phase 2 Day 2...So help me God!

Morning Weight: 159 lbs. (yey!  i lost 3.8 lbs while sleeping!)
    Previous Day Weight: 162.8 lbs.
Total OVN Weight Loss: 3.8 lbs.

I slept at around 8am and woke up at 5:30pm... I didn't feel nauseated nor dizzy considering the caloric intake I had the other day...Today will be the true test as I am going to work on an empty stomach with only a sugarless and creamless coffee on my tummy. I am planning to have sinigang na bangus later at bacolod inasal, and an apple. i still haven't figured out what i will eat for dinner. hpefully there is something that i can eat within the vicinity of my office.

Breakfast: Black Coffee with Stevia drops
Lunch: 1 whole hardboiled egg and 3 egg whites prepared by peji (isn't he the sweetest?)
1/2 grapefruit (i love this fruit, i wonder why a lot of people don't want it)
Dinner: 1 order of sinigang na bagus with green leafy veggies
    Snack:  1 pc green apple

I also took green tea...i told almost everyone in the office that i was on the diet, some of them were worried, some of them were evil, teasing me with all kinds of food! good thing, i was able to resist! lol!

    HCG Phase 2 Day 1

    Weight: 162.8 lbs.

Breakfast: 1 pc. green apple around 70 calories

Lunch: 1 can Century Bangus Fillet Spanish style (oil removed), around 270 calories
1 cup black coffee with Stevia drops (natural sweetener bought from Healthy Options)

Dinner: 1 green apple around 70 calories

There is some tolerable hunger pangs right now, but with the help of water with some cilium fiber, I know I can pull this thru, atleast today.

    My HCG Journey

Yes! I am on a diet...The HCG diet...In a nutshell, the HCG diet makes use of the HCG hormone (the pregnancy hormone) to trick the brain into thinking that you are pregnant and that you need to use all your reserve fats in your body for energy...Combined with a very low calorie diet, this promises to make you lose atleast a pound a day. I bought the Titanium HCG brand...because the seller was the only one who would meet up with me within the day I texted her that I would buy. Tee hee!

HCG Diet/protocol has 3 phases, Phase 1 which consists of 2 days of bingeing, this is the loading phase where you eat anything you want as much as you want. You also take the HCG drops/injectibles/pellets during this time. There is actually an appetite suppressing effect after so you might feel it hard for you to eat really a lot. I can't say I enjoyed this phase that much but yeah, I am sure a lot out there did! Phase 2 is the real deal. In this phase, you are only allowed to have 500 calories in a day with a lot of restrictions as to what food to eat. This goes either for 21 or 40 days, depending on one's goals. After Phase 2, you will now go into Phase 3, gradually increasing your caloric intake to 1500 a day. You are still not allowed starch and sugar. This is the reset phase where your metabolism is being.

Yes, this is starvation, but with the help of the hormones, you redirect your body to use your abnormal fats and because the drops I have has vitamin b12 in it, I do not feel weak...atleast for now...

I follow the directions of dropping 10 drops under the tongue and keeping it there for 2 minutes, 15 minutes before each meal. So that totals to 30 drops of sublingual HCG 3 times a day.

I am now on my Phase 2 Day 1. I took an apple for breakfast, 1 can of Century Bangus Spanish Style fillet, without the oil of course and a cup of black coffee with 4 drops of Stevia which I bought from Healthy Options. How I wish tuna and salmon were allowed in Phase 2, it would have made my life easier as I love tuna and salmon. Sad to say they aren't because of their high content of fatty acids, remember the omega 3? I have with me here half a liter of water with half a pack of cilium fiber and 2 drops of Stevia for some taste. I plan to have an apple for my last meal of the day.

    Pre-loading weight: 160 lbs.
    After Pre=loading weight: 162.8 lbs.

    Acceptance Is The Key

Hi, I am Jhoanne, and I am 30 pounds overweight...Yes, you are reading it right...30 pounds...Well I am really not sure because my "ideal weight" varies from time to time, depending on what diet plan or health and nutrition book I am looking at for guidance. I began really gaining weight when I started to quit smoking last quarter of last year...No regrets though, I would not trade quitting for anything else. It was a decision I took knowing the consequences...And now I must accept that I am overweight and I need to do something about it...NOW!!!

I have never been skinny ever since I can remember, I was always on the rounded side of things...At my skinniest, my built was athletic, never the model type. For reference, I am 5'4.5" in height...and yes...I am currently 162.8 pounds in weight at this very moment...But I am determined to lose atleast 30 pounds by August 15, 2012...

Far fetched? I know, right! But with determination and support from the people around me, I hope to  reach my goal or at least get close to it!

    Crossroads

I now stand at my life's new crossroad. I am torn between a life I have been used to for the last 6 years of my life and a life that is new but is free from the stress that I have been battling because of the nature of my job. Financially, there would be a trade off. I will be losing a big chunk of the extra moolah I am used to getting, but come to think of it, is php xxx worth all the drama? I have to decide a few days from now. So help me God...
